When Does Shyness Cross the Line Into a Social Anxiety Disorder?

July 26, 2021

Feeling shy or awkward at school, at work or while attending parties or other large gatherings are typical reactions for many people. But when those feelings have been making it difficult for you to interact with others during normal, everyday activities, it may be possible that you have a social anxiety disorder. You are far from alone: This condition is experienced by some 15 million adults, according to several national mental health organizations.

The therapists at the office of Hackensack are specially trained to diagnose social anxiety disorders and identify treatment to help our patients overcome their symptoms. We have a deep understanding of the stress this condition can cause and the obstacles it can create for living a full, satisfying life. Therapy has shown great success in changing our patients’ thoughts and reactions to the situations that provoke anxiety, and in teaching social skills to help them feel more comfortable. We sometimes recommend therapy in a group format, and may guide patients to support groups where they can share strategies for overcoming their fears.

Social anxiety disorder — also known as social phobia  — is described as a mental health condition in which sufferers experience an extreme, persistent fear that others are watching and judging them. It gets in the way of everything from interacting with a cashier at the grocery store, to forming friendships and intimate relationships. Sometimes the symptoms are most noticeable in performance situations such as giving a speech or a presentation at work, competing in sports or playing an instrument on stage.

If left untreated, a social anxiety disorder can persist for years or even a lifetime. Don’t let this treatable condition stand in your way of engaging life to the fullest and reaching your potential. Talk to the caring, experienced therapists at the offices of Hackensack to schedule a consultation.
