Mental Awareness Month: A Perfect Time to Practice Self Care

May is Mental Health Awareness Month in the U.S., a movement that has been observed nationally since 1949. And although much has changed in the way mental illnesses are diagnosed and treated, perceptions still remain among some people that mental disorders are less legitimate than physical ailments. Our therapist at Hackensack wants to dispel this myth and urge anyone suffering from mental health issues to “Look Within” — a theme of this year’s observance — and consider ways to make small but significant improvements. 

Self-care plays a critical role in promoting mental health, helping us to release energy, relieve stress and boost our immune systems. Here are a few simple steps provided by the National Institute for Mental Health to get started. Keep in mind that even taking a small step can make a big difference.

• Get moving. Regular exercise is essential to both mental and physical health. Even a short, 30-minute walk each day can increase energy and improve mood. 

• Set a sleep schedule. Getting enough sleep is vital, so set a schedule and stick to it. Tip: Blue light from devices and screens can make it more difficult to fall asleep,

• Don’t isolate. Maintain regular connections with family and friends who can be valuable sources of emotional support.

• Relaxation: There’s an app for that! There are many apps that can help you explore meditation, relaxation, breathing exercises and journaling.

• Know the warning signs. Seek professional help if you have been experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition for two weeks or more including difficulty sleeping; changes in appetite leading to unintended weight shifts; difficulty getting out of bed due to mood; loss of interest in pleasurable activities; and trouble performing daily responsibilities.
