Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our therapy services and what to expect when working with us.

I’m nervous as I have never been in therapy before, what should I expect?

It's completely okay to feel a little nervous. You're not alone, and there's no pressure to have it all figured out. At Search for Self, we'll meet you right where you are with warmth and understanding. Your therapist will gently walk you through everything, answer any questions, and listen to what's on your mind, all at a pace that feels right for you. Sessions are about 50 minutes, typically once a week, and it's truly a team effort. Think of it as a conversation, not an interview. Many people tell us that just making that first call brought them a sense of relief and hope. We're here for you.

What is the purpose of therapy or counseling?

Therapy provides a safe, confidential space to support your mental health, manage stress, and work through anxiety, depression, or life challenges. Our licensed therapists offer compassionate, professional care to strengthen coping skills, foster emotional well-being, enhance relationships, and promote personal growth.

Is there a difference between therapy and counseling?

Counseling and therapy are very closely related and the words are used interchangeably, but there are differences. Counseling often focuses on guidance, support, and coping strategies for specific life challenges, stress, anxiety, or relationship issues. Therapy (or psychotherapy) goes deeper, addressing mental health, emotional patterns, trauma, or long-term behavioral change. Both counseling and therapy improve emotional well-being and personal growth.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, emotionally numb, or facing life transitions, therapy can be incredibly beneficial. Whether you're dealing with communication challenges, relationship issues, or simply seeking personal growth, our experienced therapists will help determine the best approach for your unique situation.
